Ever since I was a teenager, I have lived in constant opposition to a highly ominous kind of conventionality \u2014 one that, until the beginning of this project, I had never bothered to define more precisely. Thoughtlessly, I labeled everything that seemed in any way too bourgeois, too neat, too conformist, or too uptight as \u201csquare,\u201d believing that this alone absolved me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Looking back, growing up in a modest small town in the Frankfurt metropolitan area, I was already driven by the firm conviction that one day I would inevitably turn into a square \u2014 unless I resisted with all my might. It seemed like the natural course of things, something that had to be fought at any cost. The idea of someday living a life as dull and dreary as the people on our street filled me with absurd fear. Even long after I had escaped that small-town narrowness, it hovered above my head like a sword of Damocles, and I was constantly searching for new ways to escape my fate: I sought salvation in artistic creation, in excess, in alternative communities, in activism, and in many other things. But the fear kept catching up with me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One day I realized that I had never actually defined what my personal bogeyman even looked like. That struck me as rather absurd. I had been running all this time \u2014 and didn\u2019t even know exactly what I was running from. And so I began working on this project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In five visualized musical pieces, the resulting work tells, in an essayistic manner, the story of my personal confrontation with the square within me. It makes no claim to completeness, precision, or universal validity. Nor does it offer a universal definition of what this damned conventionality really is.
